Chapter Ten

When Mary came awake an hour later, she grinned to find herself held securely in Graham’s embrace. The faint scent of him teased her nose. As surreptitiously as she could, she breathed in the crisp, evergreen smell of his cologne or shaving soap. His grooming habits were much different from those of her husband, who had never worn a scent and had done nothing to cover the smells of sweat or dirt. This was delicious, though, and she could grow entirely too used to breathing that in. The fire at her back warmed her skin and took the early spring chill from the air, but thoughts of the marquess occupied the bulk of her mind.

Though she hadn’t been certain he would agree to it, she’d done her best to lead him down the path to sharing intercourse with her. The fact she’d eased him into temptation so he was no longer an innocent pleased her beyond what was probably proper. That bit of carnal play had managed to affect her more than she assumed. Though his showing at intercourse had been poor and the act brief without a release for her, he had managed to bring her to bliss rather quickly with manual stimulation. Control would come later, once the exertion wasn’t quite so new, but for his first time out, it had been satisfying enough.

She looked forward to learning what he enjoyed and showing him what she did.

As gently as she could, Mary wriggled out of his arms. He murmured a protest in sleep and flopped over onto his back, which only put the bulk of his form at fair advantage. While she left the sofa, she looked her fill. There was no doubt the marquess had a commanding body that he successfully hid beneath his clothes. The faint ridges on his stomach and abdomen made her want to explore him with her lips and tongue. When she flicked her gaze to his equipage that was steadily growing with arousal, her fingers itched to touch him again. All the golden hair liberally sprinkled over his chest only added to his charm.

Oh, he would be a distraction if she let him.

The question remained: did she? At the moment, she had no answers, for she was adamant she wouldn’t allow herself to fall in love again, nor did she wish to marry. To say nothing of the fact that she and Graham were only playing at an engagement. Then another, more chilling, thought occurred. The marquess hadn’t taken any preventative measures when they’d coupled. If her lack of children during her marriage hadn’t been due to a problem with her being able to conceive, there might be an issue with her falling pregnant from what she and Graham had just done. What would become of her if she fell into dire straits? She didn’t wish to trap the man into marriage merely for the sake of a child, yet the truth of a harsh life for said child was just as distasteful.
